05 Jun Spotlight Turns to Sarasota for Major 2019 Rowing Events
Sarasota’s role as the country’s center for rowing advances with a lineup of exciting events for the 2019 summer season. Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates, the non-profit organization that operates Nathan Benderson Park (NBP), has gone to extensive lengths to secure major events this summer and beyond, in an effort to actualize its vision of establishing the city as the nation’s center for championship rowing.
Approximately 1,500 elite high school rowers will descend on NBP from June 6-9, 2019 for the USRowing Youth National Championships, inaugurating a three-year partnership. And the competition is steep — featuring more than 350 crews from all over the country that competed for a spot in the tournament, promising an adrenaline-inducing spectacle that is sure to entertain rowing enthusiasts.
The Youth National Championship is just one of several tournaments booked at NBP in 2019, including the World Rowing Under 23 Championships, hosted in Poland last year. Rowers from as far as China and Russia will head to Sarasota to compete in the prestigious event in late July.
With its 400-acre lake and a state-of-the-art wave attenuator that keeps the waters calm for rowers, NBP is a prime locale for major rowing events. And next year promises to live up to this year’s excitement, as the park will once again host the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic rowing team trials in 2020. It is an exciting development for the sport’s local fans — watching Olympic selections in your own hometown is an experience of epic proportions.
Sarasota’s future as a national center for rowing is another shining example of its commitment to growth and diversity. While balmy weather and a pristine coastline make the city an inherently enviable destination, downtown’s aggressive evolution into a tropical urban paradise thanks to countless beautification projects and new business openings offers residents enriching lifestyle beyond the beach.
